The intoxicating bean we know as coffee has a lengthy association with the Dutch that goes back hundreds of years.
Coffee first arrived in Europe around 1615. Dutch traders were famous for being shrewd merchants and, as is completely understandable, were quite uncomfortable with a monopoly that they themselves weren't monopolising.
Being a European story, it wouldn't be complete without deception, theft and a smuggler, led by Dutchman Peter van den Broecke. He sneakily smuggled coffee seedlings into Holland in 1616.
During this time the Dutch attempted to cultivate coffee in Holland but alas it was unsuccessful. In 1658 they took their seedlings and cultivated them in Ceylon and Java. That's when the Dutch coffee trade truly began in earnest. Very soon Java became the primary supplier of coffee into Europe.
Now the fascinating and checkered actions of the VOC are firmly left to the pages of history.
Here in Port Adelaide Tom and the Dutch Coffee Lab crew proudly carry on the ‘Dutch smugglers‘ passion for the coffee experience - all of the subtle temptation in which it can be enjoyed, savoured, enhanced and celebrated. Let Dutch Coffee Lab be your supplier of liquid gold.
